Why does the DPF need cleaning?

The function of DPF is equivalent to a filter screen, which can intercept various particulate matter in engine exhaust, mainly carbon particles, commonly known as black smoke. However, as the amount of particulate matter intercepted increases, the DPF will also be blocked by carbon particles, resulting in an increase in engine exhaust back pressure, and a decrease in power and economy. At this time, it is necessary to use some methods to burn these intercepted particles, turn them into gases, and discharge them, clearing the space inside the DPF. This process is called DPF regeneration.

The regeneration of DPF is divided into active regeneration and passive regeneration. Active regeneration refers to the use of external means to increase the temperature in the DPF, causing trapped particles in the DPF to ignite and combust into gas emissions. Common methods include electric heating regeneration, DOC front fuel injection regeneration, and so on.

Passive regeneration of DPF refers to an uncontrolled regeneration method in which DPF continuously oxidizes soot during daily use. The main methods include adding a combustion promoter to the fuel and applying a catalyst to the DPF.

The particles trapped in DPF are not 100% combustible, and there are always some non combustible substances left behind, which we call ash substances. The main sources of ash are engine oil additives, engine metal debris, and metal components in diesel fuel. The most important source is engine oil additives, which are generally composed of zinc, calcium, and magnesium sulfides, phosphides, and oxides.

As oil is used, ash in the DPF will accumulate and occupy the space originally used to capture carbon particles. Due to the inability of both active and passive regeneration to clean these substances, other cleaning methods are needed.
